Organizing yourself for travel or camping

Written by Marybeth Welty and Milena Morales of Sustainable Lifestyle Solutions as part of our Organizers Blogging Collab.

Traveling is one of the most fulfilling experiences in life. New adventures and opportunities for learning, expanding on a cultural level, traveling helps you learn more about yourself and learn beyond your surroundings. As the writer and poet Hans Christian Andersen said: “To travel is to live”.

If you want to travel more and explore this world full of wonder, follow along for my tips to make your experience as easy and enjoyable as possible.

The most important thing when starting a trip is to plan it, visualize it, and then make it happen. Here are some tips you can incorporate into your trip planning:

1. Decide the type of trip you want to do. Do you prefer going to the beach, to a mountain, to a beautiful town or prefer a big city?

2. Once you know your destination, check your budget, travel time, decide if you are going alone, with friends, as a couple, with children, etc.

3. Do research about the destination, its currency, weather, essential places to visit, the language, and whether or not it requires a visa or other documents. Now that we are in Covid times, make sure you research your destination’s Covid requirements for vaccinations, testing, quarantining, and social distancing. Certain countries, states, and provinces have more restrictions than others so make sure you look into

4. Define a budget and check the cost of your needs, for example, food, accommodations, and transportation are the 3 main budgetary elements. Other things you might want to budget for are: entrance to places, tours, souvenirs/shopping, drinks, rental equipment, activity costs.

5. Carry light, practical, and versatile luggage. Bring travel sized toiletries and only essential clothing, shoes, accessories, and outerwear. Always bring an umbrella and weather versatile clothing in case it rains.

6. Get Trip Insurance. We often want to overlook it, to assume that nothing will happen to us, but it would be absolutely awful if something were to happen so it is better to be protected in case of an emergency. NOTE: Especially make sure to get COVID insurance incase you contract Covid-19 while on your holiday.

There are many options when it comes to traveling depending on what experience you want to have; do you want something luxurious or something more relaxed and connected to nature? Not all trips have to include flying to an expensive resort and staying in a 5 Star hotel. Even camping can be an incredible and unforgettable adventure!

… Keep reading for ways you can organize a simple camping getaway for your holiday.

Let’s go camping! how to organize everything:

1. The destination and other factors mentioned above will always be the first thing to consider.

2. Check the weather! If it is cold, warm, or raining will make a big difference in all that you need for the trip. And sometimes the weather can change the day before you leave. Keep an eye on the forecast so you can best prepare yourself for a trip out in the elements.

3. Define your budget. You could do a low-cost trip with tent camping with no electrical plug ins and no washroom facilities, or find a higher end “glamping” location with exclusive services, such as a heating, shower, and private bathroom.

4. Check any restrictions the campgrounds have such as pets, fire, etc.

5. If you are tent camping then it’s crucial to have a safe and comfortable tent. This is a must. Make sure to check the size and that it will fit the amount of people you require, also check that it is water repellent and even insulated protective. And don’t forget your tools to assemble it when you get to your campsite.

6. Bring personal hygiene items including soap, insect repellent, and sunscreen.

7. Comfortable and light luggage. Bring comfortable, stretchy/flexible clothes so you can be comfortable and move easily, and water resistant shoes you don’t mind getting dirty…because it can often be muddy in nature even if it’s not raining. It’s also a good idea to bring a sweatshirt, rain coat, rain boots, and a few changes of underwear!…because well…you never know.

8. Food is very important when camping. Depending on where and how you are camping, what access to equipment you will have, and what access to grocery stores you will have, make sure you bring what you will need. Even if there is a grocery store, I like to bring some basics for things to eat on the day I get there and the next morning for breakfast. If you get there late and it’s getting dark, you can spend your time getting your tent set up with the little amount of daylight that is left instead of scrounging for food. It’s always good to have some non-perishable food, plenty of water, and if you can, take a portable stove, propane canister, heatproof pot/pan or a bbq so you can cook or heat things up.

9. First aid kit, including bandages, disinfectant, and antibiotic ointment, regular medications, and upset stomach medications (tums, pepto bismal, Imodium, etc.). If you have any allergies be sure to bring your medication Include your health documents here.

Ready to escape and connect freely with nature? Don’t forget to capture the beauty that surrounds you – take your camera!

Cortisol is a steroid hormone in the glucocorticoid class of hormones. Too much cortisol causes rapid weight gain, a flushed and round face, high blood pressure, skin changes, and mood swings just to name a few.
